Abandoned bungalow turned into a paradise for drug addicts plaguing the residents
Batu Gerakan promises to get DBKL to solve the problem
Press statement by Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
23 November 2012
Last Wednesday (14 November), Gerakan Batu Division along with officers from the DBKL has visited Taman Eastern in Jalan Ipoh, to have a pow-wow with the local residents in order to understand the problems that they are facing currently.
Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator Dr. Dominic Lau pointed out that they have received complaints from the local residents claiming that there is a long-abandoned bungalow in the neighbourhood which is empty, after so many years, the whole bungalow is in ruins. Currently, the place is not just covered with weeds and a place of mosquito breeding, more often some drug addicts have been sighted in that place which has now become a "paradise" for the drug addicts who gathered around, causing considerable distress to the nearby residents and also affecting the local hygiene and the environment. Although prior to this, the local residents have reflected the matter to the DBKL, nonetheless the DBKL cannot take any further action because the place is privately owned.
"It is understood that the owner of the bungalow had passed away long time ago and he has no successor to take over this bungalow which leads to its present abandonment. At first, we will arrange the DBKL to carry out the cleaning works around the proximity of the bungalow, the police will also be informed to step up patrols at the local in order to stop the drug addicts from gathering around, attempts will also be made to look for the successor of the bungalow through various methods in order to discuss the possibility of tearing down the bungalow," said Dr. Dominic Lau.
Dr. Dominic Lau also added that Gerakan would continue to serve the residents of Batu parliamentary constituency, solve their livelihood problems and improve their quality of life.

Confusing U-turn signboard misleads the motorists
Gerakan Batu Division promises to solve the traffic problem in Jalan Ipoh
Press statement by Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator
Dr. Dominic Lau
21 November 2012
Last Wednesday (14 November), members of Gerakan Batu Division visited the Batu 4½ of Jalan Ipoh to meet with the local businessmen in order to have a grasp of problems that they are facing currently.
Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator Dr. Dominic Lau said that they have received complaints from the local businessmen who pointed out that one particular section of the road at the local has been mistaken as a U-turn prompting many vehicles to make a illegal U-turn at that point, apart from causing traffic congestion, it also poses danger to the shops nearby. In fact, the actual U-turn is located further ahead, however there is not a clear signboard being put in place which leads to many motorists unaware and therefore keep on using the same "U-turn" point.
"Due to the narrowness of the road, the shop houses nearby are at the close call whenever there is a vehicle making a U-turn, certainly there is a risk poses to them. We will reflect this matter to the DBKL and demand the authority to extend the dividing line, moreover to erect a clear signboard for U-turn, so that the motorists are informed that the actual U-turn is laid upfront and they will have to go further ahead before making the U-turn legally," said Dr. Dominic Lau.
Dr. Dominic Lau also added that Gerakan would continue to serve the residents of Batu parliament constituency, solve their livelihood problems and improve their quality of life.

Application for PPR flat hindered despite being forced to relocate
Batu Gerakan promises to fight from DBKL
Press statement by Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
20 November 2012
Yesterday (19 November), members of Gerakan Batu Division led by Batu Gerakan Service Center Coordinator Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai once again met with the 25 families who live in the squatter area of Kampung Sekma, Sentul in order to give an account to the residents about the follow-up by Batu Gerakan Division on the latest development of the related issue on which the residents have received a court order asking them to relocate before 30 November.
Dr. Dominic Lau pointed out that Gerakan Batu Division has met and held talks with the KL Mayor and Deputy Minister of Federal Territories And Urban Wellbeing respectively, the conclusion of the meeting was that once the squatter area located on a private land has been given an eviction order by the land owner, the developer should make appropriate compensation, the government will not provide PPR flat to the residents who are affected under the forced relocation. Although the residents are aware of the government's policy, however they still make a plea to the DBKL to take into consideration on the fact that they have filed the application for PPR flat since 2007 as a ground to approve their application.
"Based on the fact that these 25 families are poor, mostly dependent on labour work for a living and have been residing at the local for over 50 years and also legitimate Malaysians as well, however there is still no news on their application for PPR flat after 5 years. The most pressing matter of the moment, Gerakan Batu Division hope that DBKL can show some leniency and urge DBKL to approve the application of these 25 families through humanitarian grounds," said Dr. Dominic Lau.
On the other hand, the related developer has agreed to make compensation to 7 of those families, however the compensation will only be paid to them once they have relocated, this proves to be troublesome for the residents because they have no extra money to arrange for the relocation works. In this regard, Gerakan Batu Division will seek the related developer to make the compensation in advance to the residents who are affected, so that they can arrange the relocation and settling works. Yesterday we discovered that the developer plans to seal off one of the road leading into the kampung, we already instructed the developer to suspend the action, because it is yet to reach the time limit as prescribed. If the developer insists on sealing off the road, we will take further legal action.
Besides, Gerakan Batu Division also received news on last night that the squatter area has caught fire and burning down some of the wooden housing units. Members of Gerakan Batu Division along with the volunteer fire unit immediately went to offer help and to comfort the victims as well as to arrange for temporary shelter to the affected residents. In this regard, Gerakan Batu Division urges the government to seriously consider the urgent need for a PPR flat unit by the residents at this moment.
Dr. Dominic Lau also added that Gerakan would continue to serve the residents of Batu parliamentary constituency, solve their livelihood problems and improve their quality of life.

Gerakan Youth deplores teachers' harsh treatment to students
Dominic Lau says this will traumatise the students for life
Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
20 November 2012
Gerakan Youth Secretary General, Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai deplores the recent harsh methods used by 3 teachers to discipline a group of 17 Form Five students from a broading school in Johor Bahru, where the students were forced to do 700 push-ups and strip down their pants.
"I am at a lost for words upon getting the news. How can the teachers do this to their students? It is total humiliation for the students having to do 700 push-ups in front of their peers. What is even worse is that they are also forced to strip down. This will surely traumatise the students for life."
Dr. Dominic Lau further condemned the 3 teachers by saying that this is a disgraceful act as teachers should be educating and disciplining their students in a humane way. This incident is one of the latest news of teachers abusing their powers to humiliate their students in the pretext of disciplining them. Previously there were incidents where teachers who insulted their students with racial slurs.
"I understand that students are bound to be mischievous and can be hard to deal with, but if the teachers themselves stoop so low to handle the situation, what is the difference between them and untrained people? As for disciplining methods, there are many ways to control the situation."
Dr. Dominic Lau, also UCSI associate professor urged the Ministry of Education to seriously review this matter to prevent such incidents from happening again. He also hoped that teacher training institutes would take this incident as an example to train their students on problem solving skill.
"I think that many teachers are also exposed to real life stress such as having too many workloads while at the same time just having very little time for their private lives. This could increase the anxiety and pressure suffered silently by our teachers which the Ministry of Education should take heed."

Gerakan Youth urges MoHR to organise more Youth Job Fairs
Dominic Lau says this will reduce unemployment rate
Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
19 November 2012
Gerakan Youth Secretary General, Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai expressed his satisfaction with the just concluded Barisan Nasional Youth Job Fair in PWTC saying that is a good move to reduce unemployment among graduates. It was estimated that 120,000 visitors attended the fair, with almost 100,000 submitted their resumes to the totle of 270 employers which offered more than 40,000 jobs.
"I am happy with the good response of the fair as this is another proof that the BN Youth and government indeed care for the people especially the young."
Lau said that the biggest concern for the young especially a fresh graduate is to gain employment as soon as possible to avoid continued dependence on their parents. Another reason would be to avoid the stereotype of one is lazy and does not have a good result if one remains unemployed long after graduating.
"This is also a good step as many of our graduates lack job-hunting skills and therefore have to rely on several common methods like the newspaper and internet. However I urge the government through the Ministry of Human Resource to conduct job fairs more frequently for public universities basically produces fresh graduates once a year while private institutions can come up to three times annually. This is to avoid a fresh graduate who finishes his studies at the beginning of the year being forced to wait until mid or end of the year to gain employment."
Dr. Dominic Lau, also UCSI associate professor also hoped the department can introduce job fairs in areas outside of the Klang Valley to help the graduates in those places.
Finally, he adviced fresh graduates to avoid being too choosy when choosing their first job as it is more important to gain experience first rather than demanding for perks enjoyed by experienced employees.
"Once you have experience together with knowledge, the world is yours for the taking."

Relief fund for a disabled elderly man has been raked off and confiscated
Batu Gerakan promises to arrange the Welfare Department to carry out an investigation
Press statement by Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
19 November 2012
Much to our surprise, the monthly RM 300 relief fund of a disabled elderly man has been raked off and confiscated, Gerakan Batu Division urged the Welfare Department to carry out an investigation.
In conjunction with Deepavali, Gerakan Batu Division went on to have a local visitation programme in Sentul Pasar on last Wednesday (14 November) in order to pay a visit to some poor families in the local while at the same time giving out daily necessities.
Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai who joined the visitation programme pointed out that in the midst of the visitation, we found out that one of the poor families has always been taking care of an elderly man who lives in solitude just the opposite of their house. The elderly man named Goh Tian Seng, aged 72 and disabled, he has been living in the local for the past 15 years. It is understood that the elderly man has been receiving the monthly RM 300 relief fund from the Welfare Department, however due to his reduced mobility he has to seek the help from others to collect the relief fund on his behalf, RM 100 will have to be paid as commission with the rest of RM 200 is the amount left for his own intake. But recently he has not been receiving any money for the past one year with help from the neighbor is the only reliance for him to continue his living.
"We suspect that someone has been collecting the relief fund nominally on behalf of the elderly man but did not pass the money to him. While this poor family is all willing to take care of a non-relative elderly man who lives in solitude, it is truly touching. Gerakan Batu Division will arrange the Welfare Department to follow-up the case of this elderly man and his daily life in order to provide further assistance as soon as possible," said Dr. Dominic Lau.

Dr. Dominic Lau also added that Gerakan would continue to serve the residents of Batu parliamentary constituency, take care of the disadvantaged groups, and solve their livelihood problems as well as to improve their quality of life.

Gerakan Youth welcomed Motorola for providing grants to 3 universities
Dr Dominic Lau urges more companies to take part
Press statement by Gerakan youth Secretary General
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
  15 November 2012

Gerakan Youth Secretary General, Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai expressed gratefulness for Motorola Solutions Inc to provide a RM500,000 grants to three universities to carry out education programmes that promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) via the World Robot Olympiad 2012 and First Lego League. He said that this proved useful in ensuring our universities receive adequate funding to conduct research in order to improve their rankings.

"I am glad that a big company like Motorola never forgets its corporate social responsibility and therefore hoped that this will inspire more GLC's and big local and international companies to provide more funding to our universities. This is also another way to retain our best talents as they do not have to leave the country to conduct their research."

He said that the government must also play a role in encouraging more companies to provide grants and scholarships to universities such as tax incentives as a good education is what brings a nation forward.

Dr. Dominic Lau, also UCSI associate professor stressed that improving our universities ranking should be the top priority for the government to propel Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020.

"I hoped that the government can provide more funding to universities other than the top ones in Malaysia to give an equal chance for them to improve their performance. This is to prevent the gap between the top universities and the others in Malaysia from widening even further."

Finally, he commented that the funds should also not only be confined to a few courses but to more courses to achieve a balanced performance from our universities.

Tax relief given to parents with children in Science stream is not feasible

Gerakan Youth urges MOE to re-evaluate the science syllabus and show concern on the prospect of the student

Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General

Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai

7 November 2012

In regard to a comment made by DPM cum Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who pointed out that in view of there are currently only 20% students in science stream, the government will look at ways to increase the number to a national target of 60%, including introducing tax relief for parents, Gerakan Youth disagreed with the purpose and also felt that it is not feasible, because it is only a short-term countermeasure that fails to solve the problem once and for all, moreover it may backfire and only serves as a stopgap measure.
Gerakan Youth Secretary General, Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said that the proposal to increase student intake for science stream through providing incentives are unsustainable in the long run. MOE should get more professional opinions on the matter.

He said that this measure may prompt the parents to encourage or force their children to choose for science streams out of the tax incentive that is offered to them. This may bring negative impact on the career and future planning of the children.
"I think that one of the main causes of low student intake in science stream is the syllabus itself where there are quite a number of students who fail to grasp the concept of the science subjects such as physics, biology, chemistry and even additional mathematics. Therefore it is common to see students getting low grades in these subjects."

In this regard, Dr. Dominic Lau suggested that the students should be exposed to the importance and value of the choice to study in the science stream beforehand as well as to improve the professionalism of the field before the MOE is aiming to encourage more students to choose for science stream. Ministry of Education should also re-evaluate the science syllabus to make it more attractive to the students. For instance, many choose to study medicine because the doctor is a highly regarded profession which is well respected and public recognition. Besides, MOE should also help the student to have a better understanding of the future prospect, career prospect and the competitiveness in the job market so that what they have learned can also be applied usefully, so that the measures that are proposed by the government will not just be implemented just for the sake of implementing it as a mean to achieve the target set by the government itself.

I believe the parents will give priority to the interest, ability and academic achievement to determine the choice of their children, surpassing the taxation benefit that lies in front of their eyes," added Dr. Dominic Lau.

Lau, also UCSI Associate Professor further commented that while he acknowledged the importance of science subjects to push Malaysia to a high-income nation, the contributions of art stream students cannot be look lightly upon.
Finally, he said that science stream student will find it harder to find a science based job by just using their SPM qualifications as most of these jobs required at least a tertiary education compared to art stream students
