Application for PPR flat hindered despite being forced to relocate
Batu Gerakan promises to fight from DBKL
Press statement by Batu Gerakan Service Centre Coordinator
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
20 November 2012
Yesterday (19 November), members of Gerakan Batu Division led by Batu Gerakan Service Center Coordinator Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai once again met with the 25 families who live in the squatter area of Kampung Sekma, Sentul in order to give an account to the residents about the follow-up by Batu Gerakan Division on the latest development of the related issue on which the residents have received a court order asking them to relocate before 30 November.
Dr. Dominic Lau pointed out that Gerakan Batu Division has met and held talks with the KL Mayor and Deputy Minister of Federal Territories And Urban Wellbeing respectively, the conclusion of the meeting was that once the squatter area located on a private land has been given an eviction order by the land owner, the developer should make appropriate compensation, the government will not provide PPR flat to the residents who are affected under the forced relocation. Although the residents are aware of the government's policy, however they still make a plea to the DBKL to take into consideration on the fact that they have filed the application for PPR flat since 2007 as a ground to approve their application.
"Based on the fact that these 25 families are poor, mostly dependent on labour work for a living and have been residing at the local for over 50 years and also legitimate Malaysians as well, however there is still no news on their application for PPR flat after 5 years. The most pressing matter of the moment, Gerakan Batu Division hope that DBKL can show some leniency and urge DBKL to approve the application of these 25 families through humanitarian grounds," said Dr. Dominic Lau.
On the other hand, the related developer has agreed to make compensation to 7 of those families, however the compensation will only be paid to them once they have relocated, this proves to be troublesome for the residents because they have no extra money to arrange for the relocation works. In this regard, Gerakan Batu Division will seek the related developer to make the compensation in advance to the residents who are affected, so that they can arrange the relocation and settling works. Yesterday we discovered that the developer plans to seal off one of the road leading into the kampung, we already instructed the developer to suspend the action, because it is yet to reach the time limit as prescribed. If the developer insists on sealing off the road, we will take further legal action.
Besides, Gerakan Batu Division also received news on last night that the squatter area has caught fire and burning down some of the wooden housing units. Members of Gerakan Batu Division along with the volunteer fire unit immediately went to offer help and to comfort the victims as well as to arrange for temporary shelter to the affected residents. In this regard, Gerakan Batu Division urges the government to seriously consider the urgent need for a PPR flat unit by the residents at this moment.
Dr. Dominic Lau also added that Gerakan would continue to serve the residents of Batu parliamentary constituency, solve their livelihood problems and improve their quality of life.
