Gerakan Youth urges MoHR to organise more Youth Job Fairs
Dominic Lau says this will reduce unemployment rate
Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General
Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
19 November 2012
Gerakan Youth Secretary General, Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai expressed his satisfaction with the just concluded Barisan Nasional Youth Job Fair in PWTC saying that is a good move to reduce unemployment among graduates. It was estimated that 120,000 visitors attended the fair, with almost 100,000 submitted their resumes to the totle of 270 employers which offered more than 40,000 jobs.
"I am happy with the good response of the fair as this is another proof that the BN Youth and government indeed care for the people especially the young."
Lau said that the biggest concern for the young especially a fresh graduate is to gain employment as soon as possible to avoid continued dependence on their parents. Another reason would be to avoid the stereotype of one is lazy and does not have a good result if one remains unemployed long after graduating.
"This is also a good step as many of our graduates lack job-hunting skills and therefore have to rely on several common methods like the newspaper and internet. However I urge the government through the Ministry of Human Resource to conduct job fairs more frequently for public universities basically produces fresh graduates once a year while private institutions can come up to three times annually. This is to avoid a fresh graduate who finishes his studies at the beginning of the year being forced to wait until mid or end of the year to gain employment."
Dr. Dominic Lau, also UCSI associate professor also hoped the department can introduce job fairs in areas outside of the Klang Valley to help the graduates in those places.
Finally, he adviced fresh graduates to avoid being too choosy when choosing their first job as it is more important to gain experience first rather than demanding for perks enjoyed by experienced employees.
"Once you have experience together with knowledge, the world is yours for the taking."
