Gerakan Youth urges police to intensify patrol during CNY to prevent break-ins
Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General
Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
  6 February 2013

Gerakan Youth Secretary General, Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai would like to wish a Happy Chinese New Year to all Malaysians especially the Chinese community in conjunction with the upcoming celebration on 10thFeb 2013.

Since there will be a huge amount of people travelling back to their hometowns, this would make their homes prone and attractive to break-ins and robberies. Dr Dominic Lau therefore urged the police to intensify patrol in Chinese majority residential areas.

"The police should provide more personals on the ground since a sizeable amount of Malaysians will be going back either to their hometown or on a holiday. This will also be a period where the break-in rate is considerably higher."

Dr Dominic Lau stressed that home owners should also play their part by informing the police and neighbours if they plan to be away from their homes for the festival.

"By informing your neighbours and especially the police, they will be able to take note of your house location and therefore increase the patrol in that area. It is sometimes difficult to assess whether the owner is only going out for their daily routine or a long period of time. Therefore a tip-off will greatly assist the police in their patrols."

He added other than preventing break-ins, human errors such as house burnings can also be prevented by switching off any applicants not in use which are prone to cause fire.

"There is also a tendency for home owners to leave the oil lamp burning at their altar despite being away for a considerable period of time. While I understand the religious factor, it is hazardous as the fire will spread quickly if any unfortunate incident happens."
