Gerakan Youth warns public to be alert of scams
Dr Dominic Lau says there is no free lunch in this world
Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General
Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai
4 February 2013

With an ever increasing amount of Malaysians being conned either virtually or face to face, Gerakan Youth Secretary General Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai advised the public to vigilant to scams running amok especially in the internet.
"Through a newspaper report recently, stating that Malaysians have been conned up to RM 90million for the past three years. This is indeed a staggering amount considering the fact that the average Malaysian salary is not high."

Lau voiced out that there are many factors why Malaysians are being continuously conned. One of the reasons is that the victim is unwilling to work preferring to indulge themselves in daydreaming of making it big.

"There are several cases which I attended personally are actually due to the fact the victim refused to learn from their previous experience. Upon being conned initially, the victim is determined to recover the money and therefore would invest in another scam hoping to recoup. This is akin to a gambler saddled with debts after he or she is not willing to let go their initial lost and therefore determined to recover it at all cost resulting them falling into a pit hole instead of a puddle."

Dr Dominic Lau, also UCSI associate professor pointed out that even some of the victims conned are from affluent occupations such as engineer, lawyers and lecturers.

"While there are a sizeable number of educated victims, please don't forget that these scammers are even smarter and cunning as they are trained to play on your psychology and ego to lure you into making an investment, promising unrealistic profits.

Finally, he would like to urge the government to assist Malaysians from being conned through awareness campaigns while giving another advice to Malaysians saying "There is no free lunch in this world."
